Ben breaks into AFL ranks
Ben Ryan (RGS 1999) has always had
a competitive nature and this persistance
in his quest to become an AFL umpire
is now a dream turned into a reality.
Ben has moved through the umpire
ranks and this year earned an umpire
call-up for every regular round game of
the season. He made his debut in 2011.
“ I had so much ner vous energy,’’
Ben recalled of that first game.
“I went to bounce the ball and I bounced it
into the backside of Jared Brennan (Suns).’ ’
Ben is an AFL umpire but he is also a
spor ts fan and relished the oppor tunity
to be on the same field as some of
the great’s of today’s game.
“ Every week I get to see players do amazing
things on the field. You also get to watch the
up and comers of the game and think these
kids are going to be good one day,’’ Ben said.
“ Having the opportunity to watch Gary
Ablett play up close is awesome.
“I’m still an active footy fan and still
love watching footy for enjoyment.’’
While playing AFL for Brothers during his
RGS days, Ben had his first taste of umpiring.
His dad Steve (former Head of
Primary School at RGS) would umpire
so Ben would often jump in as a
boundary or goal umpire, too.
“ It was all about being around footy and
making some pocket money,’’ Ben said.
Ben gradually worked his way up to
umpiring senior games and had to decide if
he wanted to keep playing or umpiring AFL.
