The RGS Open 1st XV rugby union
team once again recaptured
the Ballymore Cup under-18
title in Brisbane during August
RGS produced a 22-15 victory
over Sunshine Coast Grammar
School, the school which last year
defeated RGS in the title decider.
Try scorers for RGS were Ben
Ramsey, Connor McGarry and
Kurt Wiltshire while Connor
Tansey made two conversions
and kicked one penalt y goal.
Team coach Mr Todd Wells said
the statewide competition is for
the best schoolboy teams from
regional Queensland and Schools
outside the traditional GPS (Great
Public Schools) and AIC (Associated
Independent Colleges) competitions.
“The Ballymore Cup is crucial to
Queensland Rugby’s development
pathway as it presents the
opportunity for Schools to compete
at a higher level,’’ Mr Wells said.
RGS has been the North Queensland
Winner of this competition for the
past 12 years with the First XV
winning the State Competition in
2009 defeating All Saints Anglican
College 17-15 and in 2012 defeating
Downlands College 36 -8.
The RGS Year 8A rugby league
team made history in Term 3 with
an excellent win over St Brendan’s
College. This is the first time
the school has won an ‘A’ final
in the RDSSRL Competition.
The side won the match 26-8
and Lamech Gilmartin was
named man of the match.
The Year 10’s also made the ‘A’
final. The side was defeated by a
strong TCC team 34-12 but the
team showed plent y of character
and improvement throughout the
year. Captain Ben Condon was
named Man of the Match for RGS.
RGS Year 10 students Erin
Beak, Gabrielle Norris-Kvikne,
Natasha Heffer and Tara
Weier claimed a silver medal
at the National AeroSchools
Championships in Bendigo this term.
The result followed success
at the State titles in Brisbane
earlier in the term.
At the States Whitney Doyle,
Isabella Houlihan, Melanie
Martyn, Beak, Norris-Kvikne, Heffer
and Weier all won gold medals.
Lara Littleton, Tahlia Fenlon
and Thomazine Cumner
won bronze at the States to
also qualify for nationals.
Lilly Kele (Year 10) and Phoebe
Liosatos (Year 11) were selected
in the Queensland Country Team
to compete in the U16 Club
National Championships in Perth.
The School was well represented
at the State Touch Championships
in Toowoomba. From the
championships three girls and five
boys were selected in Queensland
teams. Congratulations to the
following Queensland representatives:
Abbie Sandilands (U12 Girls Merit
Side), Grace Wakema n (U14 Girls),
Jessica Bourke (U16 Girls), Aaron
Moore, Declan Sandilands, Riley
Comiskey and Dawson Black (U14
Boys) and Blake Moore (U16 Boys).
RGS students were among
the medals at the Queensland
State Short Course Swimming
Championships held in Brisbane
Cameron Clark (Year 7) won
three gold medals (12 years 50m
breaststroke, 100m breaststroke,
400m individual medley), three
silver medals (100m individual
medley, 200m individual medley,
50m freestyle) and two bronze
medals (100m freestyle, 200m
freest yle). Miranda Chopping
(Year 6) won silver medals (100m
individual medley, 50m breaststroke)
and bronze medals (100m
breaststroke, 50m butterfly).
Sam Tollasepp (Year 9) won
a silver medal (15 years 400m
individual medley) and Joe Milburn
(Year 8) won a bronze medal (13
years boys 200m butterfly).
The RGS Girls Tennis team won the
Country Championships at the Tennis
Queensland Secondary Schools State
Teams Finals in Rockhampton last
term. Team members were Ruth
Beaumont, Hillary Tjandramulia,
Lucy Brown, Charlotte
Cowan and Abbey Bates.
The RGS First XI and Middle School
Cricket teams qualified for their
respective North Queensland finals
of the Queensland School T20
Championships. They travel to
Mackay on 18-19 October to play
against the Mackay, Townsville
and Cairns regional winners.
The RGS Girls First XI Football team
scored a 6-0 win over Heights
College in the Rockhampton
District Secondary Schoolgirls
grand final in Term 3.
Rowena Barlow (Year 12) was
named the Queensland Captain for
Eventing and Combined Training for
this year’s National Championships.
