Home' Capricornus Quarterly : July 2012 Contents 3

A couple of months ago The Australian and then The Courier Mail published
so-called school guides or league tables largely based on information lodged at
the government s MySchool website (www.myschool.edu.au). The Australian s
April report placed The Rockhampton Grammar School among the Country s
Top 50 Country Schools as well as among Queensland s Top 50 Secondary
Schools. The School, however, didn t gure in The Courier Mail s reporting in
May. Both reports make me question if there isn t too much emphasis or a wrong
emphasis placed on statistics when it comes to measuring a school s worth.
Whilst we celebrate, for example, our placement near the top of Australia s
approximately 10,000 schools, we know the real value of RGS is found in the
partnerships we have among our parents and teachers and the support those
partnerships generate which enable our students to do their best. Something you
can t really quantify. Nor can you put numbers behind the values, ethos or culture
of our School community, or the con dence, spirit and character of our students.
NAPLAN -- which was really designed as a tool for teachers to help their
students improve literacy and numeracy skills -- may shape someone s
perceptions of a school but to really develop an informed opinion about
an education provider you need to understand the school s partnerships
with, contributions to and support from the community and its
engagement with its students, parents, teachers and administrators.
Throughout this publication you will read about the RGS student
experience from their interactions with refugees and Parliament to
their volunteer activities and unique learning experiences.
I am grateful that we have parents who are active in the School community,
students who want to be here and who give their all on both sides of the School
gate, and teachers who are as committed to their own professional development
and renewal as they are to their students -- these by any measure, are among
the characteristics that indeed make RGS a top school in anyone s book.
PS: Readers who are parents of the School, you will have also
received by now your children s reports (and teacher comments)
which describe your sons and daughters all-around achievements and
areas which require improvement. They worked hard and I extend my
thanks to you for what has been a truly outstanding semester.
